Different type of Home theater system
Probably the oldest format that’s still a viable part of the market is DVD. You can walk into just about any store that sells videos and find a huge selection, probably the largest of all current formats, of DVDs at an affordable price. The problem with DVD is that it’s becoming antiquated at an alarming rate.
Over the past few years Blu-ray has been replacing DVD as the dominant format and for an understandable reason. For just a marginally higher price (usually around five dollars or so) you can get a disk that has a much higher quality movie. Blu-ray players or Blu-ray home theater system have become more affordable over the past couple of years, as well. If quality is what you’re looking for and you either own an HDTV or don’t mind purchasing one (HDTV, like Blu-ray, has become increasingly affordable over the past few years) then Blu-ray is probably the format for you. There’s one last format, though, the new kid on the block: 3D.
Now, you might be thinking of 3D as a hokey format with those red and blue lensed glasses. 3D home theater system sounds great? Well, the format has come a long way since those days. The new 3D format combines the high definition of HDTV and Blu-ray with the subtle curves of 3D. There are a few problems with 3D though.
For starters, the price is prohibitively expensive at this point in time. It will, of course, go down over the next few years. If you just need to have the most state of the art equipment 3D is where you should be, but be warned there’s no guarantee of the format catching on. It’s a gamble, but there’s already a ton of movies and games for 3D televisions on the market.
